Who says you’re bridal gown has to be white. If you’re a colourful soul and want this to be reflected in your wedding day, there are lots of options out there for you to add that true personal style to your day, including your dress. This styled shoot by father and daughter duo, Kat and David, from Bond Photography, delved into a dark and moody magenta and violet theme, to show us how alternative bridal colours can look on your big day! Here we catch up with Kat who tells us all…
“I’m a huge believer that your wedding day should be as personal and as unique as the couple are. There can be a lot of pressure as bride to look a certain way, so I wanted to create something alternative and unique, to show people that if you want to have a more relaxed day, and you want to stick to your usual fashion style – that’s okay! You do you!”
When thinking of colour schemes, I found this beautiful raw stone amethyst necklace, so I wanted to create a colour scheme around that. I went for deep pinks and purples, as I love a dark and moody colour palette.”
“I chose Houghton House as the location as I love it as a location. There are so many interesting little nooks, with amazing textures and backdrops. I love the pillars and all the archways, and I think it was the perfect location for our alternative shoot.”
“When putting together the shoot, I knew that I didn’t want to have a white dress, and I wanted it to be simple. I loved this dusky pink colour dress, because it was a light enough colour to make the deep purples of the bouquet and make-up really pop.
The rest of the styling inspiration came from day to day life! To me, putting on your high heeled Doc Martens and a dress, is getting dressed up! I think it’s important to feel comfortable on your wedding day, if stilettos and ball gowns isn’t your vibe – don’t feel bad about it, just be yourself.”
Florals
“I chose to make the bouquet big and wild with trailing ribbons to match the rustic and relaxed theme of the shoot. I used lots of mixed foliage including Blueberry Roses, Hydrangea, Veronica, Ranunculus and a few stems of Gloriosa to create the deep pink and purple colour palette, as well as included feathers to add to the alternative theme and give the bouquet an edge.”
Hair and Make-up
“Make-up shades were inspired by amethyst tones prevalent in the mood boards created leading up to the shoot. Soft flawless skin was essential with the shoot being outdoors I knew I had to use my air-brush as this would hold up to the elements, regardless of the weather, as it heat and water resistant. Eye colours are bold yet not overpowering creating softness with strong pigments. I chose four shades to combine and blend together softening the look on the crease of the eye. Lots volume was added to the hair to create a soft tousled look with texture with an effortless feel.”
Cake
“With an outdoor theme to the day, I wanted the cake to reflect this, with a rustic natural appearance.I decided on a semi naked style as this fits in perfectly, not being too fussy or grand, but also having just the right amount of style.
Fruits of Raspberries and Blackberries were the obvious choice as they all grow naturally wild in the British countryside therefore enhancing the theme and style of the day, as well as reflecting the colour scheme. The addition of the flowers, ties the cake into the bouquet where once assembled it was presented on a slice of locally sourced log.”
