How to write a great speech

Wedding speeches.  Sometimes the best bit of a wedding.  Sometimes…not so much.  How do you create a speech that is just what’s needed?  In todays blog we give you some pointers to do just that.  What to say, when to say it, and how to get rid of any nervous butterflies.

Take It Seriously – In agreeing to do a speech and toast at any wedding, you’re both speaking for all the guests and yourself. It’s both an honour and a responsibility. Embrace this obligation with the grace and maturity it deserves.

Keep with etiquette – While having fun with a speech is great a great speech will:

  • Express how happy you are to be at the wedding and thank the bride and groom (and their parents, if appropriate) for inviting everyone to be a part of their special day.
  • Include a favorite memory, joke (not too rude!) or special secret that will be emotionally powerful.
  • Offer words of advice for their future together (A quote is a great idea here.)
  • Conclude with the standard raising of the glass.

Be organised – Writing your speech way ahead of the wedding day. Have someone you trust look over it and give feedback if necessary. Don’t make excuses – preparation will prevent hastily scrawled thoughts on napkins and last-minute panic attacks.

Simple is usually best – As you prepare your toast, keep it simple. Don’t use words you normally wouldn’t use and try not to ramble. Steer clear of embarrassing stories and dirty jokes if you want classy rather than cringey.

Practice, practice and practice again – Once written, practice reading it out loud.  Time yourself, maybe even record it and watch it back.  Be sure to write out the complete speech onto prompt cards and bring them with you when you take your place to speak.

Agree a time – Speeches usually happen once everyone has been seated and served champagne, but the bride and groom may want to have it happen between courses. Check with them and them and then, you’re ready, simply approach stand and call the crowd to attention by clinking a glass with a piece of cutlery.

Remember to take a drink – Let everyone know the wedding toast is complete by adding your favourite phrase such as Cheers! Salut!, L’chaim!, whatever works and take a sip of drink.  Surprisingly this can be easily forgotten.

Stay Calm – You’re most likely going to be nervous. Take deep breaths. Think nice thoughts. Maybe have a glass of wine, but don’t overdo it.  Remember, this is a happy day – everyone wants you to do well – and smile!

Get some Inspiration – Still stumped for what to say? The internet is filled with great quotations that you can use to start off your speech or get inspiration from.  There are websites that will provide ready written speeches for you…just add the details as required.
