You want your wedding makeup to be flawless, but most of the advice out there, online and in real life, is focused on younger skin. But what if you’re getting married post-menopause – anyone at this age will know that their skin is very different from what it once was. Generally, mature skin loses oils and moisture; when looking at your skin, it can look visibly dry, and you might see flakes of skin or it feels very tight after cleansing. Looking after your skin will help improve the performance of your foundation, which will be needed so you look your best on your wedding day (or any day!).
Using a primer or a lightweight serum will give the skin a quick drink before applying your foundation. Try to avoid using too many skincare products before applying makeup. With the right makeup choices, you won’t need to apply loads of moisturiser before putting your makeup on. This can sit on the surface of the skin, meaning you lose that all-important longevity of your makeup. I’d suggest a skin care primer, and I love the Deliah primer for this, with moisture-boosting ingredients that sink straight in and get to work quickly. It’s ideal if you need to get ready quickly, too.

A brilliant way to infect further moisture into the skin before applying your foundation is by using a hydrating mist. These clever formulas are in a spray, and you simply spritz it over your face and neck. I use these, and I love them. I keep one with me to use over make-up too. If you get that dry feeling during the day, you can spritz over as many times as you need to, and it doesn’t matter if it is over makeup. My current favourite is Lisa Eldridge’s skin and makeup enhancing mist. Cleaver ingredients and technology give a real boost to the skin that delivers.
This is one of my favourite ways to relieve dry skin. I carry Eucerin hydron mist with me to spritz on when I need to, and it does take that dry, irritated feeling away without moving any makeup. With added hyaluronic acid is currently a popular hydrating ingredient in most skin care. It delivers an extra boost of hydration. It is also great to use with hot flushes or any reddening to the skin to cool and soothe.
Now, onto foundations; I am a huge fan of the Delilah time frame foundation. The formula is easy to blend and goes on beautifully. It is a light coverage and will leave you feeling like you have no foundation. A feature I love is the pump dispenser stopping over the application and keeping the foundation mess-free. If you’re looking for a medium coverage, this would be to cover high redness or uneven skin. NARS sheer glow will give coverage and a finish that will leave your skin glowing.
Apply your foundation after you have cleansed and primed, avoiding heavy moisturiser. Dot the foundation on your forehead and inner cheeks. Most people prefer to apply with their hands. Having dry skin means your hands can be dry, meaning that all the emollients from your foundations are absorbed in your hands, leaving your skin patchy. My go-to is the buffer brush by JB Studio Makeup. I designed this brush to blend and blur foundation seamlessly into the skin, leaving no patches. Brushes are great to use with foundations as they move excess foundation from one area to another quickly and easily. If you find your brush does not have that effect, try using a mist of hydrating makeup spray on the brush. Spritz the brush from a distance so it is not saturated, and then sweep over to rehydrate the foundation.
