Destination Wedding Photography: How To Capture Memories In Beach Locations

There’s something about the ocean that makes for the most romantic wedding settings. So, it’s no wonder so many couples are getting married at sea or in exotic locations. But, without photos, did it really happen? Your photos are one of the few things from your wedding day that you can hang onto forever, so it’s important to make that camera work in all the right ways. Here are a few tips for your destination wedding photography.

How to Perfectly Capture Your Ocean-Based Wedding

For couples looking to marry at sea, these tips will ensure you have stunning wedding memories.

A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way

As with everything related to a wedding, you need to plan your photography. If you want wedding photos you’ll be proud to display in your home, don’t choose just any photographer. Do your research and look for someone with experience with beach or at-sea weddings.

Unpack Your Vision

Once you find the right person, it’s important to share your destination wedding photography vision with them. When you provide your photographer with some direction on what you want instead of hoping they’ll automatically deliver on your vision, you can avoid disappointment.

It’s also a good idea to collect a few samples of photos you love to give your photographer guidance on what you expect.

Plan Around Natural Light

When you’re shooting outside, you want to use the natural light to your advantage. Beaches and tropical locations often have harsh midday sunlight so rather take your photos in the early morning or late afternoon (golden hour) when the light is softer and more flattering.

Incorporate Your Location

Find ways to include local elements like tropical flowers, shells, or cultural concepts in your photos. Props such as dainty beach umbrellas, surfboards or even a boat can also be fun. Also, remember to grab a few shots of the scenery, such as waves crashing, the sunset, or lush greenery.

Get Creative

When shooting your wedding photos in a natural setting, you have the option to make your memories even more special. Use the wet sand or shallow water for mirror-like reflections, and if you’re feeling adventurous, consider photos in the water, on cliffs or near unique landscapes.

Capture moments like splashing into the waves or standing under a waterfall. Just don’t forget to pack a towel or wet wipes so that you can get rid of any sand between shots.

Dress for Movement

Think twice about the outfits you choose for your big day.  Lightweight and flowy fabrics are best since they won’t trap heat and will photograph well in the sea breeze. These types of fabrics also make it easier to move around at your location—that iconic picture running along the beach with your partner just isn’t doable in a fitted bodycon dress.

Capture the Evening, Too

Even though golden hour provides you with incredibly romantic shots, don’t miss the chance to capture your evening, too. Use the moonlight, stars or string lights to create impressive nighttime photos by the ocean.

The Perfect Seaside Wedding

With a little planning, the help of the right photographer and by taking full advantage of everything your location has to offer, you can capture some exceptional wedding photos.

Now, the only thing left to decide is how many photos you’re going to print!
