Planning a day out or weekend in Cambridge? Get ready to explore the city’s unique charm and discover a range of exciting date ideas in Cambridge for you and your partner to enjoy. Cambridge, with its storied history and picturesque streets and buildings, sets the stage for a variety of date ideas that are sure to make your time together special. Check out our list of suggestions for a memorable visit to this historic city ahead of our next ECO Wedding Show in the city.
Punting on the River Cam
Indulge in the quintessential Cambridge experience with a romantic punting tour along the College Backs. Uncover the enchanting history and elegance of the city as you glide under picturesque bridges, past riverside colleges and hidden private gardens. Rutherford’s Punting offer a 45 minute tour which is perfect in any season; whether you’re snuggled under blankets or basking in the sunshine sipping champagne, a romantic punting tour is an ideal outing for any couple seeking a memorable date or anniversary celebration. An experience like this will leave lasting memories of this beautiful city for you and your partner to share.
Explore the city by bicycle
If you prefer to stay on dry land then why not choose a bicycle tour of Cambridge instead? There are various tours available but we love the idea of the full day tour offered by Cambridge Bike Tours. Spend the morning sightseeing in the city before enjoying a languorous cycle through the picturesque countryside of Grantchester in the afternoon. Add in some romantic river views and the opportunity to enjoy a drink together in one of Cambridge’s many splendid pubs, and we reckon you’ve got all the ingredients for a perfect date.
Afternoon Tea infused with poetry
Can you think of anything more romantic than enjoying a cream tea with your beloved under the blossom-filled trees of an orchard? Us neither! The Orchard Tea Garden is an idyllic spot that was favoured by writers, philosophers and poets in the early 20th century – notably Rupert Brooke, Virginia Woolf and Xu Zhimo. Delight your ears and your taste buds by reading poetry and whispering sweet nothings to one another as you enjoy your tea and cake! This is a perfect spot to relax together and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of a bygone age.
Create your own gin
The Cambridge Gin Distillery pride themselves on creating outstanding gins using the freshest botanicals from around the world. They offer a variety of classes all of which explore the wonderful world of gin! You could opt for a tasting experience or a cocktail mixing class but we think the most romantic option has got to be their ‘Make It’ class which guides you through the process of creating your very own personalised flavour, tailored to the tastes of you and your beloved.
Explore The Fens
Wicken Fen just outside Cambridge is The National Trust’s oldest nature reserve. Brimming with wildlife all year round, there’s lots to explore on foot or bicycle. There’s also an option to tour the fenland waterways by boat on the Mayfly. Enjoy views of flowering meadows, sedge and reedbeds, and keep an eye out for the grazing cattle and Konik ponies that can both be spotted at the site as well as more than 9000 species of plants, birds and dragonflies.
Rooftop cocktails
The views from the rooftop bar of The Varsity Hotel are quite simply stunning. Offering sublime cocktails throughout the afternoon until the sun sets, we can’t think of a better spot to usher in the evening. In fact, why not book dinner at Six, the hotel’s celebrated restaurant, which offers seasonal, locally sourced British food alongside exceptional views of the city’s skyline.
Pause and unwind
A little outside Cambridge you will find Paus, a collection of wood fired hot tubs and saunas encircled by a walking meditation trail. Enjoy views of the Cambridgeshire countryside whilst melting away your cares, then head to the Hilltop Bistro to enjoy wholesome food created using produce from their own vegetable garden. On Thursday and Friday evenings they also offer stonebaked pizzas which can be eaten fireside after your dip. Tempted? We don’t blame you!
Cambridge has so many postcard-perfect spots that even just wandering through the streets with one another would be time very well spent. There are so many picnic spots, cosy pubs and museums to discover, not to mention historic colleges, shops and eateries to explore. These are just a few date options that we’ve chosen to throw a few less well known ideas into the mix!
