Alfresco dining and picturesque surroundings for today’s real wedding inspiration. The Italian wedding of Caroline and Philip set at Torrecchia Vecchia, Lazio, is full of beautiful details. From handmade stationery and pretty floral displays created by the bride herself, to secret garden dreamy photography… it’s perfect! We catch up with Caroline who tells us all about their love story, from their first meet to their Italian wedding day…
How Did You Caroline Meet
“Philip and I met when we were children but it was only through mutual friends we were reintroduced to each other in our 30’s. We totally hit it off from there.”
The Proposal
“Phil proposed over a cup of tea in bed while we were holidaying with friends in Sri Lanka. We were up in the mountains staying on a tea plantation when he proposed which was very fitting as we love having a lazy morning together talking over a cup of tea – it has been a ritual throughout our relationship.”
Planning The Wedding
“It had its challenges organising a wedding in Italy from Australia, but in the end it was perfect. I’ve always loved travel and the Italians sense of generosity and hospitality. Influences came from my personal sense of style with an emphasis on simplicity and a spring pallet, harmonizing with the sensational backdrop of the garden.”
The Location
“Torrechia Vecchia is the most magnificent garden with a rich history intertwined throughout. I had always dreamed of getting married in a beautiful garden, in a location that was intimate and unique. It is a truly magical place and in the early springtime with all the blossom flowering it was even more magical than I had imagined. Yanis and Marco at Torrechia Vecchia along with Cristina from Le Jour du Oui were incredibly helpful and worked really hard to created a beautiful day for us. It was unforgettable and I hope someday we will be able to return.”
The Details
“All the stationery, menus and place settings were hand made, along with the bouquets and table arrangements – I’m a graphic designer and florist with a great love of calligraphy so our wedding was a great project for me to be able to use some of my skills. The flowers were a particularly exciting project which wouldn’t have been possible with the assistance of our cake maker Toni, who helped me navigate the Rome flower market before we headed out to the venue. I was totally overjoyed by all the spring blooms buzzing around the flower market. Ranunculus, tulips, alstroemeria, lilac, bleached ferns, anthurium and roses. I went a bit crazy!”
“Our Cake was a two-tiered delight – the base was white chocolate mud cake and the second tier lemon and poppyseed created by Australian born pastry chef, food blogger, stylist and writer Toni Brancatisano based in Rome. She also helped us source some exquisite petit four style pastries from the local patisserie.”

The Best Part of the Day
“So many favourite moments, but I remember wandering off with Philip to get our photos taken in the garden and it was a beautiful moment of just the two of us together enjoying the day.”
Words of Wisdom
“Even though we didn’t do it, I would recommend a reconnaissance trip to your destination before you start the serious detail of planning a destination wedding. We were incredibly lucky to be surrounded by really dedicated, knowledgeable and talented professionals to help us along the way and our day turned out magnificently. It was a full 12 months in planning and sooooo many emails back and forth but it helped that I was very sure of the vision we wanted to achieve. I look back now and wonder how we actually pulled it off, but that’s the magic of good planning and great professionals. Also, invest in good photography! I get so much joy out of the photos that were taken of our day. I’m not sure when we will get back to Italy but I wake up every morning to a photo of our garden wedding and it takes me right back there. Bliss!”
