The micro-wedding has never been so popular, and although most couples have decided to wait until they can have unrestricted numbers, this couple decided not to let the pandemic stand in their way and tied the knot regardless. This beautiful Christmas wedding at The Belsfield Hotel in the Lake District, is intimate, romantic and full of love! Caroline and Ant share their love story, from a New York proposal to planning a micro wedding day…
HOW DID YOU MEET?
“We initially met at work many years ago and reconnected some years later which was when we got together”
THE PROPOSAL
“The proposal happened on 1st March 2019 in New York at the top of the Empire State Building and it was a complete surprise!”
PLANNING THE WEDDING
“Initially we were planning a larger wedding with around 70 guests in the day and another 30 in the evening. We are both from large families so getting it to that number had been a bit of a struggle. When Covid happened initially we were hoping that our original wedding date (30th August 2020) wouldn’t be impacted but as it got closer to the time we made the decision to postpone. We had both always liked the idea of a winter/Christmas wedding so we made the decision that we would go ahead on our reserve date in December, regardless of numbers, if we were able to. When the country went into lockdown again in November/early December it was touch and go for a while as to if we would be able to go ahead and when it was confirmed that we could we were so happy. With the restrictions, we could have 13 guests (with us taking it to 15) so we limited it to just family and confirmed all of the details.”
THE DETAILS
“We chose the wedding location as The Belsfield Hotel is lovely – the views are amazing and the Lake District is one of our favourite places, we have so many lovely memories there together and with friends and family.”
“The dress was Envy by Phoenix and was completely different to what I thought I wanted or would go for and the actual dress was blush rather than traditional white or ivory. Some might say it was a little too much sparkle but for me, there’s no such thing. The suits were navy blue with pink ties and pocket squares to tie in with the wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses. The bridesmaids were 2 of the bride’s sisters and her nephew’s fiancé. Originally there were planned to be two more bridesmaids and 2 flower girls as well but due to the number restrictions, these couldn’t attend on the day.”
“The cake was, in my humble opinion, the best wedding cake ever with a theme of New York, rainbows and glitter. A wedding cake complete with fairy lights is definitely on a whole new level of special! The flowers were artificial in the bouquets, buttonholes and corsages a decision made around cost and also wastage due to potentially going on honeymoon a couple of days after the initial wedding. They were still beautiful and photographed well and a little spritz of Lush, Snow Fairy kept them smelling lovely all day.”
“We used large balloons as the main decoration which lined the aisle, top table and were the centrepieces for the tables in the evening. We also had a balloon garland lining the top table for the wedding breakfast. We also hired a large neon sign ‘till death do us party’ in a copper frame which was the backdrop for the reception drinks and evening part of the day.”
THE BEST PART OF THE DAY
“The best part of the day was the actual vows – it felt like we had waited such a long time with so many twists and turns, disappointments, restrictions and it was so close to not happening that we were both just so happy we got to have our beautiful day with our closest family. It was just perfect.”
WORDS OF WISDOM
“I would say to anyone considering a smaller wedding, even if it isn’t what you initially planned, to give it some serious consideration. The day was perfect; no pressure, so relaxed, we had time to enjoy each other’s company and there was something so magical about spending our day with those closest to us.”
