A pop of colour and some relaxed country vibes for today’s styled shoot at The Barn at Drovers, in Wales. Molly Hanlon Photography, the creator of the shoot wanted to inspire couples with unconventional colours and mix it up with an eclectic style somewhere between glam vibes and country cool. We catch up her and the team of local suppliers who created the shoot…
“The mission of the shoot was to create inspiration for couples of something unique and non-traditional as well as to showcase the talents of local vendors. We were inspired by unconventional colours and boldness while maintaining a down to earth vibe. A mix between glam, cool, and country. We wanted to show that brides don’t have to wear white or heels and that grooms can be colourful too! The colours were also chosen with the coming autumn season in mind as this palette is perfect for when the leaves start to change and things get a bit crisper.”
“The venue, Drover’s Rest, is a stunning 16th century organic working farm and hotel/wedding venue tucked away in the Welsh Hills, on the border of Herefordshire and Wales. Their lovely rustic barn combined with our non-traditional glam gold elements gave off a very unique colourful rustic cool vibe. We added straw bales from the venue as seating for the dining table rather than chairs which really give the look a rustic glam feel.”
“The couples, decor and designs, and location were photographed with natural light. Natural light and natural movements are my preferences! For portrait sessions, I prefer to ask the couple to do things they are good at naturally, like holding each other, hugs, kisses, laughs, walking, etc. This makes the photographs seem more natural rather than forced posing. It is also much easier to get natural looking photographs by building a relationship with your photographer, getting to know them, and practicing with an engagement shoot.”
Styling – Minnie Sprinkles
“When it comes to choosing your colour palette, a huge consideration is the vibe and look you want for your day. As a stylist, I always start with a vision board and craft until I’m happy. We wanted to create something distinctive and edgy with a bright and confident tone. You could look at pairing a cool and warm colour on a colour wheel. Teal/orange/gold are a perfect colour combination especially as summer days come to a close. Next, don’t be afraid to mix old and new and to layer textures. We had an eclectic mix from the hay bail seating to mismatched brass candlesticks to gold detailed vintage plates. We ended up with just the right balance of glamour and rustic loveliness.”
Bridal – By Rose Savage
“I contributed my ivory crepe ‘daisy’ dress and accompanying tulle cape for this colourful shoot. The contrast of the orange and teal flowers looks amazing against an ivory background! The cape was made specifically for the shoot to give the overall look a bold, modern feel but still keeping it soft and romantic with the tiny embroidered daisies. Capes are perfect if you love the drama of a veil but don’t want anything around your head, plus this one is removable which means you can have 2 bridal looks in one day! For the bride that wants double the impact!”
Flowers – Janlima flowers
“With a brief of orange & teal, spray had to be used to get the right teal shade with gold sprayed on some of the foliage. For the first couple I created a dried flower bouquet, bound with a hand painted, beaded ribbon with a dried flower bow tie and pocket square for the groom. For the second couple, a fresh, wild bouquet & matching buttonhole, using blends of blue, teal & orange with natural foliage. Both looks worked with my gold moon ring providing the backdrop, styled with fresh & dried flowers, the ever popular pampas in a teal shade and two large ‘growing‘ displays.”
Cake – Cake My Day Bristol
“The inspiration for this cake comes from the very fibers of the world we live in. The beautiful teal base represents the sky, the stone made to look like a seed represents the earth and the branch with orange flowers represents the light and warmth of the sun. Everything coexists gracefully in the same time and space, just like the newly weds’ love is growing in each of them and becomes one. To replicate this, don’t be afraid to ask for a bold new design and provide details of your theme and what is meaningful to you.”
Hair and Make Up – Hepcats Barbershop & Beauty Parlour
“The make up for this shoot was well matched to the theme, glam and colorful but natural as well. A pop of pink lipstick was added for a bit of boldness. The mission of Hepcats is to really make natural features shine and that’s just what we aimed for in this shoot! To replicate, stay natural to your own features but add a pop of glam color.”
Hair Accessories – The Lucky Sixpence
“For this shoot we used one of my vintage original combs in gold, bronze and teal and a unique statement diamante geometric crown. These pieces suited the colour pallete and the modern fresh feel that we wanted to achieve. They are completely one of a kind and complemented the bespoke feel of the shoot. I specialise in reworking preloved jewellery and a custom made service. I design and create specifically for a bride which gives the opportunity for them to have items of their own sentimental jewellery to be worked into their design should they wish. It’s a great way of having a memento of a cherished person with you on your wedding day and to have a truly unique and personal headpiece.”
Jewelry – Bish Bosh Becca
“This beautiful teal and orange shoot enabled me to get creative and make some wonderfully colourful jewellery. I created delicate and unique twisted wire earrings and cuffs using Swarovski pearls and crystals. To complement these I made some simple coordinating pearl and crystal fine chain lariats and drop earrings. Lariats are so versatile as they can be worn in so many ways and different styles of dresses. Different styles of jewellery mean that a bride can change her look during her big day should she wish to. Pearls and crystals come in so many different colours. So a tip for any bride who wants some unique finishing touches for both her and her bridesmaids and flower girls. Don’t be afraid to ask. Bish Bosh Becca loves working with brides to create exactly what they are looking for.”
Props & Decor – Luxe Touch Events
“The tablescape is glamorous with a raw twist, we used flowing fabrics to soften the wooden table and bring a feminine touch to the barn decor, whilst adding mis-matched vintage crockery and candlesticks to give it its uniqueness. The cutlery adds a pop of gold for a glam vibe. This look is relatively easy to achieve, the mismatched brass vases, candlesticks and crockery can be collected over time from car boot sales and charity shops and personalised to your taste and colour scheme. And whilst we have gone for a bold, colourful scheme, this look actually suits every colour pallet, by simply switching the table runner. The style works wonderfully when the setting is raw and textured, that could be a barn, an industrial building or even a tipi, if you want to create an unique and personal look for your wedding this is the style to go for.”
Newspapers – Photo Press
“When I saw the mood board for this shoot I fell in love with the orange and teal colours. They are so bold that I wanted to keep the design simple and modern, sometimes less is more. When it comes to a wedding newspaper, it needs to represent the couple and day, so a mood board of all the plans helps them to see the bigger picture. This can be shared with suppliers, friends and family and will help to keep everything cohesive. The more that you add, the more things that don’t fit will stand out and you can eliminate them. I also recommend having a stationery only board containing things you like e.g. fonts, colours, info, design so you can understand all the separate parts that you want to bring together.”
Stationery – Harriett and Joel
“As the colour scheme for this shoot was so bold and powerful, I wanted to make sure that the stationery I designed was clean and simple – so that the stunning combination of orange and teal would be the main focus. All of the stationery was designed with just three colours; white, orange and teal. I then used different hues of the same colours (rather than introduce a new colour) to make the details stand out. This is a technique I use a lot – especially if a colour theme is varied, it always makes the stationery feel more modern and less cluttered. This design is one of my favourites – as it can be adapted to suit any wedding style just by changing minor details. For example, it’s surprising how changing the frame style on a table number can give it a totally different look!”
Envelope Cushions – Billet Doux
“Teal and orange- we loved that combo straight away…might it be because it is the colours of our brand? But it’s thanks to this shoot that we decided to go more bold with our range of envelope cushions. They are used to exchange rings at your wedding ceremony, write wedding vows or send a love note on the morning of the wedding. We choose a delicate French 1930’s rayon silk and metallic ribbon to bring something old and something blue to the theme. My Billet Doux is all about memories and keepsakes and it’s lovely to have pops of colours at weddings, to match flowers, decor, stationery, bridesmaid dresses. This is one way you can make your wedding truly unique and memorable. In the years to come we will see more bold colours introduced into wedding themes. Go bright and bold.”
Lollipops – Willow and Boo
“These scrumptious treats were inspired by the colours of the shoot as well as the theme of love, as they are shaped in the style of a heart. What a sweet treat to give your guests that can be made in any colour desired.”
Wedding Converse
“What a way to make a statement! Wearing converse on your wedding day not only bucks all traditional trends, it also helps your feet be much more comfortable for the entire day. Dance, run, play! These wedding converse were designed to be bold, with the theme colours of orange and gold, which works perfectly with the dark teal and white of the dresses. Wedding Converse, based out of Luton, also guarantees that all our shoes are 100% authentic. You can customise them to your heart’s content. Our crystal designs are created with Swarovski crystals. Swarovski crystals are precision created which produces brilliant crystals and the ultimate bling!”
