It’s the year of 2020, and with limits on number of weddings and no chance of a romantic elopement abroad, this team of suppliers created an uplifting, bright and colourful elopement on home turf, at the stylish city venue Mortimer House, London. Stylist Callie Pettigrew created the concept behind the shoot, wanting to bring hope and inspiration to couples alike with a tropical London elopement We hear from the team…
“We created a modern, micro wedding inspired shoot in the contemporary loft & gallery space of Mortimer House, located in Fitzrovia. Due to the current situation in which couples can’t go ahead with their original wedding plans or even pack up and elope, we wanted to bring the tropical and sexy elements of an elopement to London, bringing colour to the city. This crazy pandemic that we find ourselves in has put many restrictions on the couples still getting married in 2020. Plans have changed drastically, so I wanted to create a shoot to give inspiration back to those couples who are having a hard time. It’s no longer possible for couples to have the huge celebrations they planned, but we can’t elope easily either, so the idea behind this shoot was to bring the visual aspects of a tropical elopement to London.”
“The loft & gallery space at Mortimer House gave us the perfect backdrop to make this happen. Their modern, contemporary interior is full of tropical plants and luxe materials, whilst also having exceptional views of the city from their various balcony spaces. The juxtaposition between the tropical elements and the urban setting helped us create this sexy paradise in the city.”
“Not enough brides wear colour on their wedding day, and with all traditions out the window, we wanted to encourage couples to go bold for a more contemporary bridal look. Often couples forget to look at their day as a big picture, concentrating on general aspects rather than everything as a whole. I picked a striking golden yellow dress that highlighted the model’s skin and complimented the wider colour scheme beautifully. An alternative wedding dress may not be for everyone, but I really think people are going to start being bolder with their choices in this ‘new normal’ going forward.
Styling – Callie Pettigrew
“This shoot used modern & considered colour, mixed with fruity florals, to create a city paradise full of natural light and urban views. The styling was based on a warm colour palette of pink, orange and yellow, which mixed beautifully with touches of deep green foliage and lime green accents in the tablescape. We definitely weren’t afraid of colour with this one, but made sure to include textures of natural wood and elements of brass for grounding. All tableware was provided by Maison Margaux. I chose a base of simple, classic pieces, mixed with unique coloured glassware and floral inner plates, for an elegant, but playful dining set up. We also included rattan placemats for added texture, and tortoiseshell cutlery for a modern edge. Colourful candles added height and complimented the floral runner.”
Photography – Jodie Mitchell
Photographer Jodie Mitchell says “I wanted to make sure that I captured the bright, tropical colours that the team had put together so perfectly. The venue had so many tall, beautiful windows, meaning the lighting was perfect throughout the day. The panelled windows gave me a more editorial effect in the bright sunlight for us to play with, complimenting the vividness of our colour scheme. The different elements of the day put together by the team worked so well together to create a perfect set for photos that bring a tropical elopement into the city”
Flowers – Salad Studio
“Salad Studio used a range of tropical and British flowers to mimic the mesh of the two worlds”. Sally says “Using the colour palette of pinks, oranges and yellows I used a combination of quirky tropical flowers paired with local seasonal blooms such as pink cosmos, burgundy amaranthus and structural yellow fennel. The vibrant colours of flowers really complimented the fresh fruit which was used throughout the styling.”
Hair and Make Up – Abi Taylor
“As this shoot was all about colour, we really wanted this to carry through in all aspects, including the make up”. Abi Taylor says “To compliment the tropical theme of the shoot, I decided to use a gorgeous bright pink colour on Meera’s eyes – the pink complimented the yellow dress perfectly and worked well with the vibrant florals. I wanted to keep the rest of the look as glowy, fresh and natural as possible so not to overpower the look and really make the eyes pop.”
