Some magical dark fairytale wonder with today’s wedding inspiration at Nunney Castle, Somerset. Inspired by Disney’s Maleficent; it’s dark, dreamy and full of alternative ideas for your big day. Coordinated by photographer Maria of Maria Madison Photography and Georgiana of Cake My Day they created a world of mesmerising beauty and brought together a team of creatives to tell a tale of a romantic elopement. Here we catch up with them to find out about how this Nunney Castle inspiration was created…
“Along with a whole team of other incredible creatives, we wanted to create a piece of inspiration on dark fairy tale Maleficent teamed with an intimate elopement, aimed at couples who wish to be unique in a light of another age, and yet contemporary through the small details which make all the difference when planning your wedding. We really wanted to focus on bespoke hand made items as much as possible, and both support and promote small businesses, who make you and your wedding day their priority in order to create the perfect day for you”
Cake – Cake My Day
“We created not one but two wedding cakes with different vibes. The first cake was a striking four-tiered showstopper with dramatic gothic arches, a shadowy marbled tier and modelled black tree roots – this was to signify the power, growth and eternity. We wanted to create a mesmerising work of art in it’s right. The second cake was a black and burgundy velvet naked cake, eye catching through its simplicity. Any style the couples choose has it’s charm, they can have a luxury cake as well as a simple one and still be within the theme.”
Venue – Nunney Castle
“The remaining ruins of once beautiful Nunney Castle is the perfect venue for a relaxed intimate wedding . On the shoot day they were resting in a soft light, ideal for the bride and groom portraits, and were the perfect setting for the theme allowing us to light a sea of candles at sunset and work the magic just like Maleficent used to. Weddings don’t always need a luxurious venue, if the couple love a different vibe.”
Flowers – Peony and Thistle Design
“The bridal bouquet was a natural mix of eucalyptus enhanced with proteas, dahlias, roses and berries, to create a textured, organic vibe with colour impact, in a delightful contrast with the dark bridal gown. The tablescape florals allowed the stationery and tableware to really pop and brought a mysterious feeling under the candlelight. The theme allows many combinations of flower species and colours and it can be brought to life under different colour scheme too.”
Props – Rustic Rentals
“Props and decorative pieces were carefully selected to match the theme perfectly; from intriguing rustic table, candles covered in melted and drained wax, vintage brass candle holders and candelabras, through stunning antique Victorian chairs and gold framed mirror to the wooden crates”
Photography – Maria Madison Photography
“My style is moody and darker as I love the beauty of shadows and the way they emphasise human expressions and lighter tones of the pictures. The pictures are indeed full of mystery, not revealing their contents all at once. I wanted to act like a fine observer and to capture the warm interaction of our models, the beauty of the setting and lots of details without being intrusive.”
Dress – Rose Savage
“The beautiful dress that the bride wore was designed bespoke for the shoot. Twenty metres of black tulle with a peach taffeta layer underneath went into this bespoke romantic, dark fairy tale piece. I loved the nod towards lingerie with the figure flattering corset bodice and peach and black tones of the dress.”
Suit and Accessories
“The navy herringbone suit we supplied for the groom was worn with deep navy Suave Owl shirt – dark but soft in appearance, matching the bride. The contrasting gold pocket adds statement to the groom’s attire”
Tableware
“Styling couldn’t be complete without the stunning tableware: absolutely gorgeous charger and textured stone plates, elegant gold edge and smoky glassware and beautifully designed gold cutlery.”
Stationery
“Amazing stationery was created and dedicated to this shoot. I simply loved the textures, glowing/shiny golds and beautiful fonts along with the velvet ribbons and vintage style gold wax stamps. They matched the theme and brought a mysterious vibe to the setting.”
Boots – House Of Elliot
“We designed and made sophisticated Victorian inspired black lace boots threaded with sumptuous satin ribbon and we knew they were just what it takes to fulfil the bold and sexy look of the tamed by love Maleficent.”
Hair Make-up and Accessories
“Minimal and sleek hair do was complemented by the gorgeous hand made accessories. I wanted the feel of the makeup to be dark and rich but with a soft modern edge. I used rich warm chocolate and burgundy tones rather than black on the eyes so that the overall look was romantic and not gothic. The model had gorgeous skin and I wanted to keep the skin paired back and glowing so as not to look too heavy. A touch of gentle contour and highlight enhanced cheekbones so that it was really the eyes and lips that popped here. A classic deep burgundy red matte on the lips added elegance with definition. Similarly the hair style was relaxed and undone to keep it modern and not too fussy. The dress does the talking here especially with the asymmetric neckline and I wanted to enhance that – so kept the hair simple yet beautiful.”
