Fresh modern and full of beautiful plants! Yes there’s no florals in this inspirational shoot at Primrose Hill Farm, Oxfordshire, but who cares, it’s beautiful! A different approach if your looking for something more sustainable for your big day, and you can use the plants as favours, so guests can have a permanent reminder of your big day! Margot Watt of Petite Pearl Events came up with the concept for this Primrose Hill Farm shoot and we hear from her and the team on how they created it…
“The idea for our “Modern Botanical” elopement came from wanting to create a sustainability focused wedding editorial using only plants, no flowers allowed! The vibe is cool and modern but still elegant and approachable, all set in a modern barn lovingly converted with a bright, comfortably minimalist atmosphere. We chose plants with a variety of textures and colours, looking for unexpected and dramatic pinks and reds in amongst the range of green tones.”
“We love the sustainability of plants -how they can continue to be enjoyed after the wedding is over! We adore the idea of gifting some to your friends and family, keeping a few for yourselves and watching them grow and decorate your home long after the wedding is done! Along those lines, the abundance for this shoot came from the plants themselves, the rest of the elements we kept fairly minimalist. We chose plants with a full and structural feeling and opted for a mix of patterns, textures and colours, finding unexpected and dramatic pops of pinks and reds in amongst the range of green tones.”
“We complimented this by adding pops of colour balanced by touches of black and gold through the custom stationery suite and laser cut sign, tableware, candles, cake, accessories and even clothing. Our bride wore an amazing black jumpsuit and our groom complimented her in a simple white dress shirt and black jeans, bracers and velvet bowtie. This all came together to create a modern and sophisticated look perfect for a less formal elopement or non-traditional wedding!”
“All of this took place in an amazing venue in the Oxfordshire countryside -a modern barn lovingly converted with a bright, airy and comfortably minimalist vibe. Our couple was even able to relax and get ready onsite in the beautiful farmhouse which provides the perfect accommodation for an intimate getaway wedding or elopement.”
Florist – Anna Fern Weddings
“To achieve a similar look to the ceremony set-up we created, it’s important to create depth by mixing different tones of greens and textures. We placed plants at different heights and distributed them in the space to create the illusion of a greenery arch. Each couple can then decide to personalize the set-up with props like the candles and custom sign we used -the possibilities are endless, and the style of this backdrop can be adapted to a lot of different wedding themes! It’s a perfect choice, especially for venues which have a mix of modern and relaxed looks. The bridal bouquet is fully wired, which means it’s very light and comfortable to carry. This kind of bouquet requires leaves which are hardy and not too delicate and prone to wilting, your florist can test different plants and colour combinations to find “the one”!”

“For this elopement, I wanted to highlight the beauty of Primrose Hill Farm and its idyllic landscapes as well as its modern and elegant features. This character-filled farmhouse struck a balance of rustic comforts and stylish minimalist details that helped create the perfect setting for our elopement. I loved the contrast of our dramatic blacks and playfulness of the pop of pink that was inspired by our botanicals. The balance of the two truly reflects our couple’s vibrant and classy personalities. To top it off, we were lucky to have a gorgeous sunset that brought so much warmth and elevated the already gorgeous scenery.”
Stationery – The Little Paper Shop
“Here at The Little Paper Shop, we love the concept of a modern, non-traditional elopement without any of the usual wedding florals. It really spoke to us and we had so much fun pulling together a colourful yet sophisticated palette inspired by the pink and red tones in the plants! We wanted to embrace an edgier aesthetic for the stationery, so opted to combine relaxed hand-lettering and minimalist gothic type with thick, abstract brush strokes. The results have to be one of my favourite designs of the year that our studio has produced! In addition to the colour and type choices, we also added in some luxe, textural details with thick cardstock, silk tassels and hand-applied gold foil accents. The resulting look is perfect for the modern couple who wish to make a unique and playfully sophisticated statement for their Big Day.”
Hair + Makeup – Jo for the Tori Harris Pro Team
“The Tori Harris Pro Team is an elite hair and makeup agency where we pride ourselves on matching our artists to our brides, not just finding an artist to fit the budget but also the style of the bride. We absolutely loved the brief when we received it from Margot, the black jumpsuit immediately meant we’d be stepping away from a natural look and working with a subtle, sexy look. We sent Jo to the shoot as we felt she matched the sleek, modern elegance of the brief the best and we’re in love with the look she created, it’s perfect for a modern bride who wants that bridal glow while also feeling sophisticated and sexy.”
Cake – MonAnnie
“I was excited about this shoot concept as it was unique and pushed the boundaries of traditional wedding design. Growing up in Nigeria, almost every home, had a variety of the Calathea plant (the plant used as the main inspiration for this shoot). The opportunity to create a cake incorporating the leaves in sugar form was both refreshing and nostalgic. Each leaf was individually crafted and painted. Just like the plants, the sugar leaves can be kept as a memento from your special day!”
