Nathan Walker Photography
“I shoot weddings for carefree couples who understand that wedding photography is about so much more than taking pretty pictures all day. My work is known for quirky, offbeat photos. Thanks to my documentary approach, I don’t stage or set things up; I’m completely hands-off. This frees me to capture spontaneous in-between moments and I believe that it is the off-script moments that make every wedding unique. My couples want their wedding photos to make them laugh and to fill in the blanks because they will not have been able to ‘see’ so much of what surrounded their day. In that regard, I consider myself to be a storyteller alongside being a wedding photographer. I’m based in Nottingham and I shoot weddings around the country.”
What are your influences when you create?
“I draw inspiration from whatever is in front of me at the time in terms of composition and moment. Sometimes, I’m drawn to interesting patterns, colours or quality of light. Sometimes, my spark of inspiration could be an interesting character or a sense that something cool could happen if I give a scene time to develop.”
Who is your typical couple?
“My couples are laid back and don’t take themselves too seriously. My brides aren’t going to freak out if they get dirt on their wedding dress for instance, they’d roll with and embrace it as part of their day. So naturally, they’ll be quite happy to jump on a space hopper or laugh about it if they spill a glass of wine! They just want to have the best time with their best people and for them they want the wedding photography experience to fit with that. They don’t want to be taken away from the party for an extended photoshoot. Typically, their day will include many DIY elements and contributions from the family.”
How important is being sustainable?
“Sustainability is important to me as a wedding photographer. My web hosting company plants trees every year that I have been with them and I use energy-efficient LED lights and rechargeable batteries. I also offer a sustainable option for my wedding albums with a company called Folio. My business is also paperless as all contracts and invoices are provided online.”
What are you most proud of so far?
“I’m most proud of all my amazing recent reviews on Google. When you hear couples tell you of the lasting impact your work has on people it’s hard not to feel moved. It’s such a privilege to do what I do, and I put my all into it. My biggest achievement so far was being named one of the best wedding photographers in the world by This is Reportage, which is the world’s largest documentary wedding photography competition.”
What is next for you and your company?
“Over the next year, I’ll be running two more wedding photography workshops. They are a great way to give back and help aspiring photographers improve their documentary approach at weddings. I’m also thinking about offering mentorships.”
